Many folks question whether the 8 yard kilt or casual kilt is the proper choice when purchasing a kilt. A traditional kilt has 8 yards of material, however, in the past several years the “casual” or 5 yard kilt has become very popular.  Many people ask what the difference is between the traditional 8 yard kilt and the casual kilt.   The casual kilt has less material in it.  The casual kilt will have less pleats and pleats that are not as deep or heavy.  The end result is a kilt that is lighter.  The casual kilt has become increasingly popular for several reasons.  The casual kilt is quite a bit less money than a traditional 8 yard kilt.  Many kilt wearers want to wear a lighter kilt for activities, such as hiking, working, and social wearing.  Destination weddings at the beach are also a reason to choose a lighter kilt.

Many folks ask if it is appropriate to wear a 5 yard kilt to a formal function.  The answer is absolutely yes! The kilt is formal and dressed up no matter what the yardage or weight.  There are some folks that want nothing less than “traditional”, thereby the 8 yard kilt is the choice for them.  However, if you are looking to get a high quality kilt, save a little money and yardage, then the casual 5 yard kilt is for you.
