The Highland Bagpipe Piobaireachd Tutor is produced by The National Piping Centre in Scotland. This book is a very comprehensive tutor on learning to Piobaireachd. This tutor will teach you about the proper technique and give you a basic understanding of canntaireachd (mouth music).
It no longer comes with a CD. The tunes can now be found on The National Piping Centres website
Highland Bagpipe Tutor – Book 1
The Highland Bagpipe Tutor Book 1 is produced by The National Piping Centre in Scotland. The “green book” is by far one of the best selling bagpipe tuition books.
This is a great starting point for those wanting to learn how to play the bagpipes. It has been the starting point for a lot of today’s great pipers.
First produced in 1952, this book by the College of Piping’s then Joint Principals Seumas MacNeill and Thomas Pearston, is by far the biggest selling book on learning to play the bagpipe ever issued, selling to date around 500,000 copies worldwide
It covers the basics that you need to know and it also includes accompanying videos to go along with the chapters in the book that can be found online on The National Piping Centre website.

The Highland Bagpipe Tutor Book 2 is the only maintenance manual you will ever need.
Learn how to tune, handle reeds, tie in a bag and how to strike in your pipes when playing in a band.
The book is fairly comprehensive and there are many tips that both beginners and experienced pipers will find useful.
Highland Bagpipe Tutor Book 3
The Highland Bagpipe Tutor Book 3 is a natural progression from the Green Tutor Book 1.
Tutor 3 continues with more in depth practice on embellishments. It provides an introduction to the playing of competition marches, strathspeys, reels, hornpipes and jigs. There are also tunes for dancing and lessons on standard pieces such as Scotland the Brave and Flowers of the Forest.
With Tutor 1, Tutor 3 has all the tunes and theory necessary to pass the light music sections of the Pipe and Drumming Qualifications Board Levels 1 – 4 examinations.
